The Vespa GT is nearly complete.
My Vespa GT project is almost at the finish line and there are only a few jobs left to do. Well I say a few jobs, the electrics are still to be connected which could be fun. Luckily, I am receiving a helping hand on the wiring from Steve, who is the thesaurus for all things Vespa and Lambretta here in Jersey. Then, all that will be left to do, is fit the fuel tank, front light and speedo. But you lot will have to wait for that!
Last weekend I decided to fit the horn, steering lock cover and the panels to see how they look on the scooter. The horn was an easy two minute job, as the wires just had to be connected. The horn just had to be screwed on to the frame. However, fitting the steering lock was a bit more of a pain.
We had removed the old steering lock cover as the lock itself was faulty so needed to be replaced, otherwise the scooter may not pass its inspection. That would be a shouting match! The only way to remove the pin was to cut the end off, which then allowed the cover to be removed. But the rest of the pin was still inside the lock mechanism on the frame. This had to be drilled out. Now came the fun bit. The hole that we drilled did push the old pin out, but it was too big for the new pin to fit in to the hole....Always something to go wrong! However, the solution was to wrap the new pin in tape to make it thicker, therefore the pin would not come out. It was a tight fit. What made the new lock cover even better is that it has 'Barcelona' embroidered on the front of it. Makes it more authentic when having a Spanish scooter. Muoy Bien!
Lastly, I decided to fit the panels. I cut the panel rubbers to the correct lengths and fitted them carefully. The right hand side panel fitted perfectly against the frame. However, the left panel would not push in close to the frame. After assessing the situation, I found that after the panel had been sprayed, the panel hook had become clogged with paint. This then stopped the panel hook from being able to move as it should. I then sprayed some WD40 in to it and after a few wiggles the panel hook became free moving. I attempted to fit the panel on and it locked in nicely. Can't wait to get the scooter on the road now!
I have attached some photos below of the finished products. Stay tuned for my next write up!
